If someone were to ask you to name the major U.S. city that is the furthest south, you would probably have a tough time coming up with the answer. Your first instinct might be to say Miami, or wonder if there is a city on Texas' South Padre Island that is "major" enough to qualify. Maybe it could be San Diego, you might think, or San Juan, if the question includes Puerto Rico. The answer, however, is much simpler than that. It's Honolulu, the capital of Hawaii and the most populous city in the state. Deriving its name from a word meaning "place of shelter", you will find that for a vacation filled with warm sun, tropical beaches and luxury hotels Honolulu is a great place to go.

Of all the possible vacation destinations across the islands of Hawaii, the "sheltered bay" is the most convenient to get to, as the major airport in the area, Honolulu International (HNL) is located there. All direct flights from the U.S. mainland and other areas land at this airport on the island of Oahu. Commuter flights are available to the other islands, but if you wish to save some money to put toward luxury hotels Honolulu makes a fine final destination in which to spend your Hawaiian vacation. Just like everywhere in the tropical paradise of Hawaii, Oahu is marked by gorgeous weather, sunny beaches, warm ocean water and a relaxed pace of life conducive to a revitalizing vacation. However, that is not all Honolulu has to offer. Being a larger city, the sheltered bay offers some additional opportunities that you might not find in more rural haunts around the islands.

First of all, the city's Arts District is full of cultural institutions, art galleries and venues for the performing arts. The twelve-block district adjacent to Chinatown boasts the Hawaii Theatre among its more notable attractions. This historic theater and cinema is a historic landmark and still features live performances to this day.

Many visitors to Oahu enjoy spending time in Waikiki, a popular tourist district. In Waikiki, you can sample some of the local cuisine, pick up some Hawaiian souvenirs for your friends and family back home, or get a taste for the local nightlife at one of the many clubs. Many of the luxury hotels Honolulu has to offer line the streets of Waikiki, which boasts millions of visitors each year.

Next to Waikiki is the district of Kaka'ako, which you may want to visit for its shopping. Two large shopping areas are located in this district, Ward Center and Ward Warehouse. Between Kaka'ako and Waikiki is the district of Ala Moana, where you can enjoy even more shopping at the Ala Moana Center, which bills itself as the largest open-air shopping center in the world. Of course, because of the idyllic Hawaiian climate, an open-air shopping center can operate year round, unlike in other settings. Ask the staff at your choice of the luxury hotels Honolulu has to offer for directions on how you can explore some of these fascinating and entertaining neighborhoods of the city.

Of course, while you are in Hawaii, you will undoubtedly want to capitalize on some of the unique opportunities afforded to you by being on an island where the average temperature seldom drops below 70 degrees. This means taking advantage of the warm waters of the Pacific for activities like swimming, surfing, sailing, snorkeling or diving. Hawaii is an extremely popular destination for scuba divers, not only because of the warm year round temperatures, but also the vast variety of local marine life that often cannot be found in other locales. Of course, you are also free to just soak up the sun by lounging and relaxing on the beach or by the pool.

A Hawaiian vacation is most people's dream. It's a trip that is on the bucket list of many a traveler. To make that dream a reality for yourself, it is easy as booking a flight and making a reservation at any of the fine luxury hotels Honolulu has to offer. You will find yourself mesmerized by the beauty of the island in no time and have memories that you can reflect on for years to come.
